Musical time travel - introduction to music of the Middle Ages!
Are you curious about Western music from before ca. 1450? We will play selections of pieces originating from the 12th through the early 15th centuries, discovering some of the distinct styles, forms, and composers along the way. We’ll also touch on melodic modes, structural forms distinguishing sacred and secular music, rhythmic features, the role of improvisation, and instrument-specific medieval iconography - all things that are essential if you want to perform medieval repertoire. While the vast world of medieval music is too large to cover in one session, you can get a first glimpse into this beautiful repertoire that is as timeless as it is time specific!
