Semper Dowland, Semper Dolens - Celebrating The Master of Melancholy (400-year anniversary of John Dowland’s death) English composer, lutenist, and singer John Dowland, an exact contemporary of William Shakespeare, was active during the late Elizabethan and Jacobean eras. Dowland primarily composed for lute (solo lute, voice and lute, viol consort and lute), and was stylistically influenced by popular Elizabethan consort songs and dance music of the day, such as pavans and galliards. His self-penned nickname “Semper Dowland, semper dolens” (always Dowland, always doleful) reflects the melancholic quality of many of his most famous musical compositions, but it is unclear if this was matched by his personality. This month’s playing meeting commemorates the 400-year anniversary of Dowland’s death, with compositions by John Dowland and his contemporaries, arranged for recorders.
