March 29 Special Presentation

"Tracing the Evolution of the Recorder" - David Lasocki in conversation with Wendy Powers

Description

"Tracing the Evolution of the Recorder" - David Lasocki, author of "The Recorder" (Yale Musical Instrument Series, published in 2023), in conversation with Wendy Powers (CUNY). The Recorder (Yale University Press, 2022) traces the evolution of our remarkably versatile instrument, which has been present and significant in Western music history for many centuries. Emerging from a variety of flutes played by fourteenth-century soldiers, shepherds, and watchmen, the recorder swiftly became an artistic instrument for courtly and city minstrels. Featured in music by the greatest Baroque composers, including Bach and Handel, it later played a vital role in the Early Music revival of the twentieth century, and achieved international popularity (and notoriety) in elementary education. David will discuss the 19-year gestation of this book, the challenges of a tight word limit, and the high (and low) points of the recorder’s history — and whatever you like. Please have your questions ready. The book is available as a hardcover edition or as an e-book. https://yalebooks.yale.edu/book/9780300118704/the-recorder/ The Zoom link will be live beginning at 1:30 pm Eastern (12:30 pm Central, 11:30 am Mountain, 10:30 am Pacific). Please join us as we will use the time to chat and use breakout rooms to get to know one another.
